Your modem router is just as important as your nbn plan. A plan that delivers 100Mbps to your home is useless if your modem only distributes 30Mbps via slow Wi-Fi. Here's how to make a smart choice.
Should you buy or rent your modem?
Most providers offer a modem included with the plan or available as a rental add-on ($5–$15/month). Buying your own modem typically costs $150–$350 upfront but saves money over 2+ years and gives you more control over your home network.
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Provider modem (included) | Zero upfront cost, supported by provider | May be low quality, stuck with provider's choice |
| Provider modem (rental) | Low upfront cost, replacement covered | Ongoing cost, adds up over time |
| Buy your own | Better hardware, save long-term, keep when switching | Upfront cost, self-support |
Recommendation: If you plan to stay with the same provider for 2+ years, buying your own mid-range modem router ($180–$250) almost always saves money versus paying rental fees.
What to look for in an nbn modem router
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
Wi-Fi 6 is the current standard and is faster, more efficient with many devices, and future-proof. If you're buying a new modem in 2025, there's no reason to buy anything older.
Dual or tri-band
Dual-band routers broadcast on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. 5GHz is faster but shorter range; 2.4GHz penetrates walls better but is slower. Tri-band adds a second 5GHz band for less congestion in busy households.
Coverage area
A single router typically covers 100–150 square metres reliably. For larger homes, consider a mesh system with satellite nodes to eliminate dead zones.
Number of LAN ports
If you connect devices via ethernet (strongly recommended for gaming, streaming devices and work computers), ensure your router has enough ports. Most have four; some high-end models offer 8.
Different modems for different nbn types
Not all nbn modems work with all connection types:
- FTTN and FTTC: Need a VDSL2 modem. The nbn connection box is usually already installed; you plug a VDSL modem into it.
- FTTP: Uses an ethernet connection from the nbn connection device. Any router with a WAN port works — you don't need a special modem.
- HFC: Uses an ethernet connection from the nbn connection box, similar to FTTP.
Warning: Before buying a modem, confirm your nbn technology type. A VDSL modem won't work on FTTP or HFC — you'd just be plugging a router into the nbn connection device, not using the modem functionality.
